While wearing converse shoes may help you steal my mother’s heart, it did not help Brett Butler steal a run in the ninth inning of the August 13, 1992 game at Cincinnati’s Riverfront stadium.
After doubling off of reliver Scott Ruskin in a 3-3 tie game and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Young, Butler tried to take home on the 1-2 pitch from Dwayne Harris.
The pitch was a ball, and appears to have gotten slightly away from Oliver, due to the fact that Harris has raced in to cover home in the photo.
Oliver took matters into his own hands however, and scrambled to the dish with the ball. Butler appears to have bowled Oliver over, but to no avail, as Oliver is holding the ball up for home plate umpire Mike Winters, who has his fist cocked to call Butler out.
The Dodgers bailed out Butler, however, and it only took two batters. Henry lost Karros, and Henry “Oh Henry bar” Rodriguez, ripped an RBI double, enough to saddle Dwayne Henry with his third loss of the year.
Current Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell got the win for LA.
